A method for preparing a g rapheme- graphene precursor which comp ri ses: condensing 1,4 di cy anobenzene with a 3 halo benzyl derivative to produce 1,4-bis (3- chlorophenylacetyl) benzene; oxidizing this- at least a p ortion of the 1,4-bis(3-chlorophen vlacety l) benzene to pr oduce an oxidized 1,4-bis(3-chlorophen vlacetyl) benzene wherein een-ert- the methylene groups of the phenyl acetyl moieties were converted to carbonyl groups; reacting the pr-euet- oxidized 1,4-bis(3-chlorophen vlacet yl) benzene with optionally substituted dibenzyl ketone to p roduce a reacted benzene compound; and reacting at least a p ortion of the preduc- reacted benzene compound with an alkyne to convert the- at least one residual halo groups to ethynyl groups; ad, if necessary,.rmvn n unwad substituents subsequently.
The method of claim 20, further comprising removing at least one unwanted sub stituent.
The method of claim 20, wherein the 3 halo benzyl derivative is a G rignard intermediate.

A method for preparing a graphene precursor which comprises: reacting an intermediate with an alkyne to convert at least one halo group to an ethynyl group, wherein the intermediate was produced by a method comprising: condensing 1,4 dicyanobenzene with a 3 halo benzyl derivative to produce 1, 4- bis (3-chlorophenylacetyl) benzene; oxidizing this to convert the methylene groups of the phenyl acetyl moieties to carbonyl groups; reacting the product with optionally substituted dibenzyl ketone.
The method of claim 24, wherein the 3 halo benzyl derivative is a G rignard intermediate.
The method of claim 24, wherein the 3 halo benzyl derivative is 3-chlorobenzyl lithium.
The method of claim 24, further comprising removing at least one unwanted substitutent.
