A method for making a carbon-based aerogel in which the carbon atoms are a rr anged into a sheet-like nanostructure comprising: providing graphite oxide; creating a dispersion of the graphite oxide in a liquid; adding a water soluble polymer to the graphite oxide dispersion in an amount in the range of about one part by weight to about five parts by weight with respect to the graphite oxide; and E-CO-00034-US -3- drying the dispersion to form a graphene oxide aerogel.
The method of claim 12, further comprising reducing the graphene oxide to graphene.
(cu rr ently amended) The method of claim 12 9, wherein the step of creating a dispersion comprises adding graphite oxide in an amount in the range of about 1 milligram to about milligrams per milliliter of liquid.
The method of claim 12 9, wherein the step of creating a dispersion comprises creating a wet-gel dispersion.
The method of claim 12 9, wherein the step of drying comprises critical point drying the dispersion.
The method of claim 12 9, wherein the step of drying comprises freeze drying the dispersion.
The method of claim 12 9, wherein the step of creating a dispersion comprises exfoliating the graphite oxide in the liquid by ultrasonication.

Graphite oxide was prepared by the Hummers' method using 20g powdered flake graphite (SP-1, Bay Carbon MI), 10g sodium nitrate, 0.5L sulfuric acid, and 60g potassium permanganate. The graphite oxide was dried, then dispersed in deionized water at 2.5 mg/mL, exfoliated by mild ultrasonication, poured into a 200 mL flask, flash frozen in liquid nitrogen, and freeze-dried overnight to yield a pristine graphene oxide aerogel (foam-like, light yellow, highly porous network of crumpled sheets a few to tens of micrometers in size, electrically semiconducting).

A polymer-reinforced graphene oxide aerogel was prepared in the same manner as Example 1, except that polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was added to the graphite oxide dispersion prior to freeze drying.
