Abstract

Layer-selective hydrogenation and proton transport are demonstrated in twisted bilayer graphene under double gating. A strong perpendicular electric field polarizes the decoupled graphene layers at fixed total charge density, enabling hydrogenation of only the layer facing incoming protons and producing a conductor-insulator transition while proton transport persists through the bilayer. The work shows configurable logic behavior, hysteresis, and long-lived state retention, and combines experiments with DFT calculations and an analytical electrostatic model.
