A method for the use of a mined graphite material in the electrolytic production of graphitic material, the method comprising the steps of: 1) mining a graphite ore material using a nonexplosive mining method such that the graphite ore material is in a form that constitutes an appropriate feedstock for an electrolytic process for the production of graphitic materials through exfoliation; and 2) employing that graphite ore material directly as an electrode in the electrolytic production of graphitic material without significant processing.
