Fluorinated graphene oxide was prepared starting from 99.5% pure graphite. Graphene oxide was prepared by improved Hummers method: 20g graphite powder (50-mesh), 10g potassium persulfate, 10g phosphorus pentoxide were added to concentrated H₂SO₄ at 80°C, stirred, cooled >6h, washed to neutrality, dried. Dried sample was added to 230 mL concentrated H₂SO₄ at 0°C, then 60g KMnO₄ added, kept below 20°C, then oil-bath at 35°C for 2h; 920 mL deionized water added, after 15 min, 2.8L deionized water containing 50 mL 30% H₂O₂ added; mixture filtered, washed with 5L of 5–10% HCl, vacuum dried at 60°C for 48h. Fluorinated graphene oxide was prepared by placing dried graphene oxide in reactor, purging with dry N₂ for 2h, then flowing N₂/F₂ mixed gas (10 vol% F₂) at 100°C for 12h. XPS analysis showed mass percent F = 40%, mass percent O = 15%.
