IN TIHEL CLAIMS 1. (Previously presented) A method for forming a holey carbon allotrope, comprising: providing a carbon allotrope in solid form; depositing carbon oxidation catalyst nanopar t icles on the surface of the carbon allotrope sheet in a facile, controllable, and solvent-free process to yield a carbon oxidation catalyst- carbon allotrope material; subjecting the resulting carbon oxidation catalyst-carbon allotrope material to a thermal treatment in air; se lectively oxidizing the carbons in contact with the carbon oxidation catalyst nanoparticles i nto gaseous b yp roducts; and removing the carbon o xidatio n catalyst nanoparticles such that the holes remain in the surface of the carbon allotrope a n d penetrate completely theret h rough.
