A method to form an insulin-G Q D conjugate, wherein a single biomolecule of insulin is coupled to a single graphene quantum dot (G Q D), the method comprising: contacting a solution containing GQD with 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC), wherein the GQD comprises one or more carboxyl groups on an edge of the GQD; and wherein 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide hydrochloride reacts with the one or more carboxyl groups to form an O-acylisourea intermediate compound; contacting the O-acylisourea intermediate compound with N-hydroxysuccinimide (NH S), to provide an N H S ester-modified GQD; and contacting the N H S ester-modified G Q D with biomolecules of insulin to form the insulin -GQD conjugat,,,,,, wherein the insulin -GQD conjugate is suitable for imaging an interior of a living cell.
