Abstract

Graphene nanoribbons on MgO/Ag(001) exhibit systematic control of charge occupancy and spin state. Integer electron transfer from Ag through MgO discretizes the charge state, yielding alternating closed-shell and open-shell behavior depending on ribbon length and shape. STM and differential conductance measurements are compared with mean-field Hubbard simulations, revealing sharp quantum-well states, correlation gaps, and charge excess up to 19 electrons in a single ribbon.
