Abstract

The paper uses normal-incidence X-ray standing wave (NIXSW) imaging to resolve the structure of bismuthene on SiC(0001), comparing the Bi β phase and hydrogenated β+H phase. By separating chemically distinct species in XPS and combining measurements across multiple Bragg reflections, the study identifies a hydrogen-induced change in the Bi adsorption site from T₄ hollow to T₁ top sites above Si, explaining formation of the bismuthene honeycomb and its associated band-structure features.
